St Hugh's Church Lads & Church Girls Brigade
Pantomime

At Christmas 1949 a trip was arranged to take members of the new company to see the pantomime at St. Peter's Sheffield. This was the beginning of the St Hugh's Pantomimes. The following year Jack and the Beanstalk was held at St. Hugh's. This was written by Mr N. A. P. Stanley of Sheffield and produced by A. A. H. Kidd Miss Valerie Foster was the Dancing Mistress and the piano was played by 17 year old Brian Bowness. It was a tremendous success and the pantomime continued for many years, amongst the writers and producers were Sam Lord, Jack Goodyear, Jack Hall, George Barlow, Peter Harrington, Jill Hardman and Rex Kiddle. Hedley Wigfall was the main stay in the design of the scenery and its painting and he was still involved in 1971. After this the show fell by the wayside until after an absence of 25 years the curtain went up on CINDERELLA in 1996, this was a tremendous success and was followed in 1997 by the true story of ALADDIN & HIS MAGICAL LAMP. The company lived up to the showbiz tradition of 'the show must go on' despite the theft of £3,000 of high-tech sound equipment shortly before the production. The panto was directed by Anne Brown and produced and written by Bob Owen. A great deal of work both front and backstage ensured this was again a great success.

Although the pantomime hasn't become the annual event it used to be - watch this space! I'm sure you haven't seen the last of these great productions.
